About
The Colonnade Tennis Club (“the Club”) is a not-for-profit unincorporated association of tennis players in New Canaan, Connecticut. We participate in the Fairfield Country Tennis League.
Mission & Objective:
The purpose of the Colonnade Tennis Club is to:
- Promote the sport of Tennis in and for the town of New Canaan (“the Town”)
- Provide a sporting, social, and competitive forum for playing tennis
- Partner and cooperate with the town of New Canaan with respect to the responsible use of its public tennis courts and park property,
- Model the values of good sportsmanship, citizenship, and decorum.
Courts & Facilities:
The tennis courts used by the Club are eight (8) Har-Tru courts located at Mead Park in New Canaan. Two of the courts have lighting for evening play.
Mead Park is located 241 Park Street and is within walking distance to the center of town and New Canaan train station. Adjacent to the southernmost courts is a park restaurant with a sunny outdoor patio. The building which houses the kitchen also houses well maintained public facilities; if necessary, they could be used for changing into tennis attire.
The Club gets its namesake from a pre-world war II marble colonnade which serves as a central point for convening before and socializing after matches.
Club Structure:
The Club is a not-for-profit unincorporated association governed by a Board of Directors. The Board shall be comprised of only New Canaan residents. The Board has the power to appoint officers, form subcommittees, approve membership, and impose dues as a condition of membership.
Membership:
The membership of the Club is comprised primarily of New Canaan residents. All members and guests regardless of residency must fully comply with Town rules with respect to court usage. All New Canaan residents are eligible for consideration for membership. Membership is approved by the Board of Directors. Nonresidents will be considered on a case-by-case basis based primarily on dedication to the sport of tennis.
League Play:
The membership of the Club is responsible for taking care of all aspects of hosting home matches versus guest clubs and their members. This includes booking courts, any associated remittances to the Town, confirming play-ability, and appropriate communication with guest teams and the Town.
Dues:
As a not for profit association, regular dues will be calibrated to the cost of achieving the Club’s goals such as forming a team to join a tennis league. Since court usage at Mead Park is secured through town permitting, regular dues will be used generally for operating purposes such as the purchase of tennis balls, athletic drinks, and any other associated league or Town fees.
Court Usage:
All resident members of the Club must obtain full-year permits from the town of New Canaan, the department of parks and recreation, as a prerequisite to obtaining an active annual membership in good standing. A non-resident member is responsible for paying their guest fees, must be a guest of a New Canaan resident, and must comply with all rules governing court usage as set forth by the Town. Town of New Canaan, Department of Recreation: Separate from the Club, the Town operates tennis programming and offers permitting for residents of New Canaan. Town-run activities include tennis clinics lead by professionals, and maintenance of courts and surrounding parkland.
